Each morning, I take a moment by the stone ledge on the edge of the woods that I am blessed to live and work in every day. I spend a few minutes in quiet reflection and appreciation of the beauty and life that surrounds me. From this peaceful space, I move into the creation of this day’s art. Each piece of stone has its’ own feel and energy. To touch the stone and allow the carving to call forth a new form is magical.
Over the years, most of what I have been commissioned to do have been large pieces- centerpieces for people’s homes , houses of worship and lives. I have been commissioned to create large artworks for various town parks, such as the dragon and flock of cement sheep for the Town of Cary , which bring thousands of children such joy every year, as they climb on them, laughing and playing.
While I love all that I do, it is a rare treat for me to hold a piece of stone or marble in the palm of my hand, and work with it to become a beautiful little bird. The slow and meticulous work is a meditation, as I swim in the sea of natural sounds that surrounds my studio. To move from one form into the other, this transformation from raw stone into a small, beautiful bird, through patience and caring, is profound.
Each piece is handcrafted and varies in size, shape and stone used. While the shape and size are individual preferences, the type of stone often dictates which bird a person will choose. Sometimes, simply for the color preference. For others, the inherent power in the stones draws them to choose…..
Onyx is a type of Chalcedony stone, a microcrystalline type of quartz occurring in several different forms, including onyx, agate, and jasper. When silica is stored in a steaming lava cavity, this beautiful stone is formed. Onyx stone exhibits extraordinary bands, which are characteristic of most colors of this stone. Onyx is found in Brazil, Mexico, Peru, USA, Madagascar, India, and Afghanistan.
Stones I use and their metaphysical benefits :
Red Onyx: A stone with extraordinary energy and an elegant look, red onyx has been used for thousands of years by warriors and religious leaders to fortify inner strength, increase willpower, elevate mood and enhance concentration and intuition. Particularly useful during emotional hardship, red onyx helps one release the burden and oppression of negative energy and allow positive energy to enlighten them with an overall sense of strength. According to Feng Shui, red onyx attracts money and freedom, and when used as a decorative showpiece rather than worn, it radiates in and around you. This stone is most useful for those intent on living the life of their dreams.
Yellow Onyx : Ancient Roman and Aztec healers believed the stone had powerful properties. Astrologers believe stones like onyx have the power to affect the human body through a series of vibrations that radiate the body's seven chakras, or energy centers. Yellow onyx is associated with seriousness and logic, and is said to help one who wears it or keeps it near by to know when to keep silent in certain situations. Physically, onyx can help sooth anxiety and depression and can boost emotional strength.
